Welcome to the Berea High School (Ohio) Class of 1962 Web Site. We've created this site to acknowledge our sense of community with a group of men and women who shared a unique time and space in the history of Berea High and the suburban Cleveland communities of Berea, Brook Park and Middleburg Heights that it serves. Our graduating class, which numbered 366 (186 girls and 180 boys) has migrated to many places over the years, and we come together here to share our past and our present as part of a larger world community. We were teenagers in a magical time between the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, with bobby sox and rock 'n roll and soda fountains and no color televisions. We watched with curiosity as commercial jetliners made maiden flights to Cleveland, and we noted with indifference as steam locomotives were retired and dismantled. We were the first generation to have transistor radios (but not in school!) and one of the last to use slide rules. We listened to Buddy Holly before Miss American Pie crashed, and we watched Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show while our parents rolled their eyes - or worse. Many of us watched the night sky in October 1957 for a glimpse of Sputnik One, and later we witnessed the start of the Space Race. And John Kennedy was assassinated before we could vote. Now we're grandparents (many of us) in an age of instant communication. We plan to share snippets from our youth as we reminisce, and perhaps we'll share something of our present as well. For those of you who know the history of the area, we were the last unified class to graduate from Berea High before the opening of Midpark High School in 1963. We were also the first class to spend three years at Roehm Junior High (opened in 1956), the first "real" junior high building in the system. And for those of you too young to remember, many of us were spared the inconveniences of the old Central School building that no longer exists.
